🏖️ Support expanded pool dates! [Quick detour from our regular After School content]
A policy order next Monday will ask DHSP to keep Gold Star pool open longer in September
Dear friends,
🏖️🏖️🏖️🏖️🏖️🏖️ Outdoor pools are on the City Council’s agenda for this coming Monday, 8/5 (screenshot below).
The policy order requests DHSP to keep Gold Start Pool (near King Open/CSUS) open later than Monday, 9/2. And to open it earlier next June. And to work with the State on expanding hours at their pools, McCrehan in North Cambridge + Veterans on Magazine Beach.
While this is not as urgent as lack of universal after school (!!), if you are a pool lover ❤️ (and aren’t you?), you could write a quick sentence in support of this effort :-)

Subject line: Support for expanded pool days policy order
Body: Dear City Leaders, My family and I love Cambridge’s pools. Given rising summer temperatures, we have longed for healthy outdoor relief earlier in June and later in September. We urge you to find a way to keep the pools open longer while temperatures are high. Thank you. [Name, street address.]

In afterschool-related news —
We’ve asked the City Manager for data from the most recent afterschool lottery. Last year, the City released lottery data in mid-August.
We also asked when the City will release information about the afterschool waiting pool, so parents can make informed choices now.
Hopefully, we’ll have an update on those issues for you soon.
PS from Eugenia:
If you want another Monday, 8/5 policy order to support, there is one on Homeless Shelters that I urge you to look at. We can do better for our ~300 homeless shelter guests in this City!
Sample Homeless Shelter policy order support email:
I'm writing to support the Homeless Shelter policy order. I know that Cambridge can provide homeless residents with shelter where the rules are posted and clear; where staff is never abusive; where basic sanitary supplies and blankets are always available; where valuables are safeguarded and not prone to theft or loss; and finally where complaints are systematically collected, assessed, and acted upon.
I am eager to see what changes result from the hearing to be scheduled under this policy order. Thank you, [Name, street address].
